My brother Ewan recommended taking the Chicago Architecture Foundation's river tour to get an understanding of the city. This was not the standard cheesy tourist's cruise. I learned a lot about the themes and motifs built high over Chicago in steel, glass and marble. Also, I hadn't realized that Chicago is a canal city! I loved seeing people boating and kayaking right through the centre of town.
One of things I love about Chicago is that the river and waterways opens up the city so you can actually see it. That and the sense that they give a damn about the look of each and every building - the variety and quality of design there makes Toronto seem efficiently boring.
