Although it was more than three months ago, most of my recent posts here continue to be on the topic of my SE Asia trip. That's not to say that nothing is happening in the here and now! Example:
-I met up with Brett, an Ontario native who was visiting from Switzerland! We've swapped e-mails for a few years since he started reading this page. I'm never shy to meet face-to-face with people I connect to through my blog! Brett and I chatted about music, expat life and what it's like to work on race cars as a career (his, not mine). Thanks for the Swiss chocolate, Brett!
-I moved desks at work! I'd been sitting at that desk for three years, longer than I've lived anywhere since I moved out of my parents' home. My former spot at the front of the office was spacious and sunny but there were many distractions (every time someone came by the kitchenette for a cup of coffee or tea, they'd stop for a chat). At my new desk in the back of the office, there are different sorts of distractions, like getting my elbows entangled with my three cubicle mates.
-I went outside for a little bit of field work before this deep freeze set in. I dug holes in the backyard of a mansion in Etobicoke in an area of high archaeological potential: we found nothing.
-The possibility of visiting Australia in October has been suggested to me. It's been seven years since I was last there so I'd really love to go back to see family, friends and the sights. A search for airfares from Toronto to Melbourne in mid-October has shown a best price of $1,978 ($2,350 with fees and taxes). Must focus on saving up my pennies and my vacation days.
-I got a new fridge for my apartment! This means I now have a freezer! And my groceries won't rot overnight! This is all so exciting!
-I also joined a new gym! There's nothing wrong with my previous gym, in fact the instructors there are great and the price was very reasonable. This new gym is on the direct walking route between my home and office which is important when we're dealing with weather in the -20s.This gym has a lot more classes per week: I've gotten back into Spinning in particular. Also, the treadmills have individual TVs on them. An hour of jogging goes by almost without notice when you're zoned out on TeleToon. This change is all in aid of getting myself to work out 6 or 7 days a week as opposed to my old pattern of 4 or 5 times. I can't deny that I'm getting older: five workouts a week don't have the same impact they used to...
NOTE: I am drafting this on a scrap of paper from my purse while I wait for two loads of drying at the laundromat. It's 6:55 on Sunday night and there's a wind chill of -21 C.
